April 7th is a day of remembrance for Du'a Khalil, a 17-year-old Kurdish art student who was stoned to death in public last year on that date by her uncle, other close relatives and a crowd of men who disapproved of the fact that she'd fallen in love with a local shopkeeper.

The show runs through May 3, and also includes Liz Garza Williams’ contemporary photographs of women and girls wearing new and vintage huipiles. Together, the photographs and paintings document not only the rich, 500-year history of the hand-loomed garments, but also their continuing signifi cance in the lives of women today. Beauty touches us, connects us, and makes us feel more alive. Why are you drawn again and again to simplicity, luminosity, or vitality when you visit an art gallery or take a walk in the woods? During this retreat you will discover how to translate your experience of beauty in nature into your unique style of art. We will create a visual journal that captures your most powerful experiences of beauty. Then you can use this book  as a source of inspiration for all your  future creative projects  working with fabric, clay, paper, or paints.

The world offers abundant and constant inspiration once you discover how to collect, connect and create from what you experience. Quite simply, aesthetic experiences awaken the soul. But how do we translate our experience of beauty into some expression of our own if we are not “trained” as artists? We have to create a way of our own.  Your art will not look like the instructors. It becomes an expression of your Creative Self.

Kelly Koeppel will be the featured artist in May at the Morrison Arts Initiative. She will exhibiting work from her recent series of large format 8mm film prints.

"I started shooting Super8 film about ten years ago, documenting trips through Europe and the U.S., and nights out with friends. Last year I made a seires of large format prints from individual 8mm frames. They are exciting pieces because they capture and suspend moments in time that would otherwise be overlooked. There are ghostly images of faces and people, that in the film, just flash by on the screen. And the qualities of the film translated to such a large format can't be replicated by other means. They are truly unique."

The Morrison Arts Initiative (MAI) is committed to enhancing the quality
of life- at Morrison and in Charlotte- by building bridges between the
area's creative community and those who are inspired by their passion
and their work. Morrison is located on the corner of Sharon and Colony
Roads in South Park. www.Morrison-Arts.org
