Rape victims should NOT have to pay for evidence collection.

Wednesday, April, 2, 2008

A friend of mine just told me about this situation--North Carolinians need to take a stand to keep from forcing rape victims to pay up to $1,600 for the collection of evidence that can lead to the prosecutions of their rapists. You can make a difference here: tell the NC Legislature NOT to charge rape victims a fee for the evidence collection that occurs during a “rape kit.”

Below is the email soliciting responses from the NC Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

Subject: NCCASA needs help with signatures!

Dear fellow North Carolinians,

As you may have heard in recent news coverage, survivors of rape in North Carolina are being billed for the evidence collection that occurs during a forensic medical exam (“rape kit”).  Let’s work together to get 5,000 signatures to ensure that survivors of rape are not billed for evidence collection!  To view and sign our petition, click here.

Thank you for supporting our efforts—together, we will end sexual violence!

Sincerely,
The North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault

Why wouldn't the (alleged) rapist have to pay for it once he is convicted? Rape victims are subjected to quite enough, thankyouverymuch. Besides the rape itself, the exam can be traumatic, police questioning humiliating, the trial a nightmare....a bill for evidence collection on top of all of that is just disgusting.

It makes absolutely no sense. And does this mean women who can't afford to pay just have to go without the ability to prove their rapist's identity? How is THAT just?
