Many times when people meet me and we agree to exchange email addresses, I get this response:
“Well...I’m afraid to email you. You’ll probably be editing my email!”
Today was no different. I was at the Go Red for Women luncheon in Uptown (and I completely agree with Jenny that Ronda Rich is an amazing speaker), and had this conversation quite a few times.
So, to all of the women I met this morning: You’re in good company. My family and friends all feel the same way. So does my husband. It’s true, I do think people should spell things properly. Yes, I get frustrated when I see the English language mangled by wayward apostrophes. And yes, if you say “preciate” instead of “appreciate” it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. (Matt Lauer, I’m looking at you.)
And truthfully, yes, I probably will be editing your emails. But not for the reasons you may think. It’s mostly just that I cannot help it. I’m like Monk, the TV detective, except instead of being a germophobe, I’m OCD about lose v. loose or whether Hillary spells her name with one “L” or two. And I honestly cannot help it.
So please, don’t be afraid to send me an email (or comment on this blog)--because I promise, I’m not judging. There are plenty of things I simply am not good at, certainly too many things to list here, and I would hate for a fear of being edited to keep us from being friends!
