Big Sister

Monday, May, 12, 2008

My baby sister just graduated from college last weekend, and I’ve spent hours editing each version of her resume, each cover letter, even the emails she sends to her potential future employers (my sister is a brilliant interior designer, but not so great with spelling), and it’s reminded me how tough it is to be a recent grad.

For the first time, my sister is her own boss, making major life decisions about relocation, health insurance, and finances, but she’s also searching for her first professional job with absolutely no idea what life as a professional is like. She’s facing the unknown, and I know especially with the economy’s recent struggles, it’s not a great time to be a recent grad.

I am really excited to see where her life takes her from here--her options are wide open, and I know she’s nervous to see how her job hunt will develop, but I hope she’s at least a little bit excited, too.

I’ve been giving her bits of unsolicited (and some solicited) advice, but I’m curious--what advice do you have for recent grads? And please, don’t say they should always wear sunscreen.

intern! or... if it's too late for that, get on every single freaking network and job-listing website and search and email and chat until your eyeballs fall out of your head. then do even more research on salaries and cities and living accomodations and are-dogs-allowed?. then cry because you are so freaking tired of being poor. then drink because you are tired of crying. then land awesome job and remember that you are probably the coolest person ever. also, taking a regular part-timey sort of job while you wait for the big bang DOES NOT SUCK, it is STILL money! okay, the end.
