First, let me ask you a question: What comes to mind when you hear the word “slut”?
It’s not good, is it? I didn’t think so.
A while ago, I got a press release from The Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte about a new show (opening tonight). It’s called “Slut!” and, according to The Actor’s Theatre:
SLUT tells the hilarious adventures of a motivated guy on a life-long quest for one-night stands. This highly improbable, irreverent journey comes with singing, dancing and lots of raspberry margaritas. It's 'South Park' meets the East Village and boy meets girl meets boy meets girl. Welcome to the fast-paced, shamelessly honest and straight-up hysterical world of SLUT -- a musical without euphemisms.
Call me crazy, but “slut” is an offensive term--whether it’s used to describe a male or a female. I get that this musical is “irreverent.” I get that it’s tongue-in-cheek. But I find the term “slut,” in any form, offensive. This may be what the Actors Theatre speaks of when it calls itself “daring,” but it falls flat to me, and I wonder how it fulfills the organization’s mission “to connect with people by representing bold and innovative new works by contemporary playwrights who share our respect for language and humanity.”
“Respect for language and humanity,” indeed.
I certainly won’t be going to see this, and I’m disappointed that an organization like The Actor’s Theatre would show such poor judgment. Shame on you.

amen sista. this sounds like the banana monologues all over again. how many performances of boy meets girls do we need? we get it - men are dim and think with their penis, that's so original. i think after 20-something years of living that, the last thing i wanna do is actually pay to see it performed in front of me on purpose when i could sit at a bar and watch for free.

In late Spring, the daughter of a friend of mine texted me from school. This young girl is 15. "I need a favor and u can't tell my mom," it read. "That's a slippery slope," I responded. "What's the favor?" Her answer floored me. "I need a pregnancy test." What followed opened a whole can of worms and I'll have to remember to blog it out soon. But what disturbed me most was that, once the mom learned what was going on, she began to refer to her daughter as a slut - sometimes in jest, often not. My heart breaks for all that child will interpret through her mom's use of such a cruel assessment.
