The Nesting Doll

Thursday, August, 14, 2008

I came across these unique nesting dolls today while scouring my art and design blogs. They are hand-made by an Australian artist named Tiel Seivl-Keevers. Check out her site Tsk Tsk. Instantly, they reminded me of the wooden version my cousin had displayed in her room as a child. There was something so intriguing about these little dolls that I loved. They were hand painted and carved with perfection.

Tiel is an artist, an illustrator, a mother, and wife. A multi-tasker. Her site says that she has been producing original art for all age groups since 2003. She has a degree in fine arts, majoring in printmaking, and a career in graphic and web design. Working now as a freelance illustrator and designer, her focus is to create original and affordable art.

Her work encompasses many styles and techniques. Since starting a family of her own she started designing imagery for children, but also sells original art and limited edition prints for more mature tastes. Her works are sold worldwide.

I aspire to be like Tiel.

When reading her personal blog where I spotted the nesting dolls work-in-progress, she was quite frustrated with life’s daily “to-do’s”. She said, “I am surrounded by unfinished products, sickness, daycare mom is away…” and the list went on. She was working on a project that her daughter insisted upon “helping” by asking a questions like, “Can I help? What are you doing? I’m hungry. Can you help me make a party hat?”

I don’t have children yet, nor am I married. And I can’t even begin to imagine how she accomplishes what she does on a daily basis. Women like this are true Wonder Women (the theme of our October issue) and are ones to be praised for the amazing things that they do. I get a slap back into reality when I say that I don’t have time to “create.” I have far too much time.

Tiel’s work is graphically fabulous and to me, she is so skirt!

You just reminded me of the set of nesting dolls my sister gave me for Christmas a couple of years ago...why have I never made them my loves before? This month, for sure!
