Erin McDermott, Ex- Preschool Teacher
By Eleanor-Scott Best, Wednesday, October 20, 2010While teaching pre-school in Charlottesville, Virginia, Erin lived in a fairly isolated cottage beyond the commotion of city life. She chose to live without television or internet so that she could “work on passions without distractions.” When asked by friends if she was bored living this way, she responded, “It would be a luxury to be bored; my mind is constantly going.” Erin soon found that when she wasn’t incessantly responding to diversions, she was creating. Having learned the art of jewelry making at The Fashion Institute of Technology, Erin began to realize this as her true calling. She decided to commit herself full time to jewelry-making when her sales income equaled that of her teaching salary. Although she misses finding Cheetos and Legos in her pockets when she empties them at the end of the day, Erin is now happily making jewelry full time at her home in Charlotte, accompanied by her bulldog Sukie.
