What the hell is wrong with this country?

Time magazine’s cover (yeah, this is for all the hermits of the world who have had their electricity cut off) shows a pretty young mother whose son is feeding from one of her breasts. The overwhelming negative reaction has simply floored me.

If you haven’t tried a product called “Nutella”, you need to go out and get some today.  But you may wish I hadn’t mentioned it; it’s a little addictive.  This creamy spread is made up primarily of hazelnuts, cocoa, and skim milk.  It’s typically on the aisle with the peanut butter in most grocery stores.  I’ve heard it often referred to as a breakfast spread but I wouldn’t go that far – it’s a little decadent for that.

Growing up, my Mother and I didn't always see eye to eye. Caught in the middle of a bitter divorce, I had to grown to resent her as I planned my escape to live with my Father. There was a lot of yelling, court orders and hurtful exchanges. It was a game of good cop/bad cop and I had declared myself as the referee.

So a lot of people have been leaving lately at my job, one of my former bosses will be leaving in June to work at another university, and I found out that the boss of my boss, who's been at ODU less than two years, will be resigning in a few weeks.  Not to mention the three other people that have left in the last two years because of better job opportunities, retirement, or personal reasons, or so they said (and I'm not saying that's not true and it probably is, though I feel there may be another reason they've all left so suddenly which I will get to momentarily).  But that doesn

May Aura-Scopes

This month’s aura-scope starts with a glistening blue wave of light cascading over last month’s peachy warm glow of wisdom. This means that the answers that you are received last month are put into action this month.

Not many people can say that they must pass through an art gallery in order to get to their office each day. Of course, museum curators and executive directors do this on a daily basis, but the difference is I’m – along with the majority of my coworkers – neither an art historian nor a museum president. However, through our work within the community, we have built strong and lifelong relationships with some of Charlotte’s most generous donors. Their altruism exceeds the time and money they’ve contributed to local nonprofits and community initiatives such the as Project L.I.F.T.

Now there is an incredible romantic inside of all of us. You know what I mean; having the attention spotlight on us with all of the accrutements that promise a night of adventure and magic. What makes it near perfect is having the type of man in your life with a penchant for orchestrating such an evening. He is special because he can make full advantage of the magically carpeted night sky, and make it seem to you that he summoned the moonbeams and all the universe has to offer...just for you.

I get stuck in my head. Walking through the grocery store I forget my popsicles, not because my mind is busily calculating complex mathematical theorems that will save the world. No. I miss out because my mind is preoccupied with larger, more perplexing issues: What should I fix for dinner? Why did George Lucas make Greedo shoot first?  Do fish drink water? These are the quandaries that cause me to miss out on the good things—like popsicles and free food samples at Whole Paycheck…ahem…Whole Foods.

The first week in May is my favorite time of the year.

Not only does my birthday fall into it, but since I became a mom, the week always carries a Second Chance feeling of optimism:  if my children (cough, husband) screw up royally in the gift giving, viola! There’s a last ditch effort to make it right with the arrival of Mother’s Day a few days later.

One of my good friends has struggled with her love affair with high heels. Unfortunately, her flat feet syndrome keeps her from being able to really enjoy the happiness wearing high heels brings us. She’s asked me to help her find heels for flat feet. PROJECT! :)

How many of you ladies out there would agree with me that it can be a slippery slope when it comes to letting our adult kids know we have a love life? I'm talking about those of us who are single again for whatever reason. That statement can be pretty funny or downright hilarious. I find myself laughing out loud at the prospect of revealing this information.

Now I understand completely what guys go through when they get up the courage to ask a girl to marry them.  It’s not easy at all, and its nerve-wracking and kind of scary.  Even though my boyfriend and I have talked about this over and out, and I have no doubt that he will say yes, I’m still struggling to find the right words and to get over my nerves and fear of rejection to ask him to marry me.  I was going to do it this past weekend, but my nerves took over and got the better of me, and I chickened out.  I had this romantic dinner I had made, and it was the perfect mo

If you could be any author, past or present, who would it be and why?  As a writer, on the journey toward publication, I get inspired every time I read a good book.  I often fantasize about what it's like to be inside a famous or not-so-famous author's head.  How did they choose characters' names, why did they have 14 chapters instead of 10, what personal experiences found their way into the manuscript?

Big fat stupid lie

If so, I’m here to tell you it’s all a big

. Writer’s block doesn’t exist. It’s an insidious scheme that writers tell themselves
when they don’t want to write.

Thanks to the warm temperatures this winter in New York, I have been getting sick, I would say, every three to five minutes. On a particularly bad hair day, my friend Patty called and asked if I could bring my dog, Miz Ruby, to a puppy shower. I don’t like going to showers for two legged creatures, but then she said it was for the reality show they were part of. Patty, Patty, Patty – it is a good thing that I really like you. And then the next request was if Ruby had an outfit she could wear.

It wasn’t what she wrote on the blog that led to her semi-forced resignation.  It was the picture that went with it that depicted President Obama in heels . . .  eating a piece of fried chicken.  John Hood, president of the conservative John Locke Foundation that sponsors the site where Tara Servatius blogged, said it was “offensive and utterly inappropriate for our blog or anyone else’s.”

I stick to the shadows—in and out like smoke through a fence or cockroaches in a bathroom. Lurking in the shadows I see no one, mainly because it’s dark, but mostly because I’m incognito. Head down, eyes to the ground, I’m hoping no one recognizes me. This is not because I’m a famous person. This is because I’m shy. I don’t seek out the spotlight. This is why I’d never yell at someone. I’d definitely never yell at Will Ferrell. But, my husband would. He would, and he did.

When exactly did the Women's Movement get started? How did it end up affecting our social interactions with the male sex? And for that matter, did it institute the new attitude that ushered in a more liberal set of standards for us? Let me explain. Remember when single women would not go to a dance without a partner?

I grab Number Two’s hand and speak firm and low.  “I will give you candy from the gift shop if you say you want to go back to the hotel right now,” I whisper, as Number One and my husband jabber away about how cool its gonna be on the water rides at Islands of Adventure.  He tilts his head to the side and narrows his eyes.  “Can I play the Ipad?” he counters in a whisper.

“Deal.”

George and I both hail from the suburbs of Pittsburgh where the aroma of pierogies and Primati sandwiches follows you to PNC Park to Heinz Field. However, we first met in the South – North Carolina to be exact – during the first week of orientation for our community-service based scholarship program.

Teen daughter:  Can I borrow this?

Mom (wary): Ummmm, okay.

Teen translation:  Sure.  And make sure to leave it in your room indefinitely -- even throw it on the floor – and leave it covered with tons of other stuff so that when I go to retrieve it, it will be an impossible feat to find it and makes me incredibly late for work….

I’ve been trying to lighten up some of my favorite recipes.  I’ve tried a couple of different mini mac and cheese pies/muffins, but this one stuck with me because the others I tried were a little dry and crumbly.  I felt like this one stays together well and the moisture makes the consistency much better.  I’ve lightened it up with 2% milk vs.

I can’t believe it’s been a week since I last blogged.  The only other times I’ve gone this long without blogging has been because I’m vacation, and it’s difficult to try and keep up with blogs posts while you’re in the Caribbean.  Also at the time I had no labtop, and figured if I went a week or so without a post, it’d be alright.  I guess I haven’t posted lately because I didn’t feel I had that much to say.  My life has basically been the same old, same old, go to work, come home and relax with my man, talk/visit with my grandparents as well as my parents, you know, ju

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.

My mother wouldn’t recognize me. I’m not that same shy little girl whose straight hair she used to put into two tight pony-tails. I’ve changed. Something has definitely changed—and it has changed dramatically. I wish things could go back to the way things were. I was more comfortable then. I knew who I was then. I can’t go back—not without some major chemical help. My mother would walk right past me in the mall, because I am walking around with someone else’s hair.

Sometimes the world spins out of its orbit, teeters on its axis and everything is out of control. Up is down, down is up, round is square; light becomes dark…well you get my drift. The world and all that comprises it is fragile enough anyway so it is very easy sometimes for me to get turned upside down. Chasing the darkness away and holding onto the light is almost a daily battle; trying to rock steady and hold my course.
